Hugh Gledhill

Funk and Soul Guitar
Big Dinosaur Mouth, the debut album from Hugh Gledhill, is released 15 Sep on Sookie Records.
My Guitar Playing
I started playing guitar in my teens and now have over 15 years experience playing funk and soul guitar on the live circuit. I mostly play with Hammond bands, both instrumental with horns and accompanying vocalists. I’ve played with my own band the Jezebel Sextet, James Taylor Quartet and Sir Joe Quarterman.

My sound is rooted in raw soul, funk, boogaloo and jazz from the 1960s – there’s definitely some Steve Cropper and Grant Green in there, along with many other RnB and soul-jazz greats.
Listeners often respond to and comment on the sound. I’ve always favoured a raw, honest sound that reflects what happens in front of a live audience. But my sound and phrasing is also shaped by a many years of listening to classic soul, funk, R&B and jazz records.
Artists I’ve worked with
Here’s some of the people I’ve previously performed live or worked with in the studio: Jezebel Sextet (Sookie Records); James Taylor Quartet (Chin Chin, Real Self); Sam Kelly (Cymande); Sir Joe Quarterman (GSF/Mercury); Randa & The Soul Kingdom (Freestyle Records); Rev Chunky; Matt Henry; Sulene Fleming; Leigh Gracie (Speedometer/Freestyle Records); Killer Horns (Alice Russell); Seamus Beaghen (Trio Valore); James Morton (Porkchop).
Some Places I’ve played

I’ve also made related radio appearances and live broadcasts on BBC6 Music and LBC radio, plus radio in Italy and France.
