Verneri Pohjola Bullhorn – Reviewed by TheBWShow

Edition Records are very fast establishing themselves as one of Europe’s Premier Jazz Labels with a roster of wonderful players and Verneri is no exception to this.  The trumpet player based in Helsinki, Sweden, has previously released albums on the ACT Label and Bullhorn is his first for the Edition Label.
To be honest, when I first heard the album the word “beautiful” sprung to mind and, after listening to it many times, “beautiful” sticks. To say this is a good album would be an understatement.  Verneri takes the listener on a journey from soft numbers to BIG, FULL, in-your-face tunes.  In speaking to Veneri about the album, he let slip that he was particularly influenced by film scores and this certainly comes across in several numbers.  Bullhorn, for me, is a great album; as good as any work that’s been produced by modern day masters of the trumpet, such as Ambrose Akinmusire.
In his liner note, Verneri says: “It doesn’t necessarily feel that way but you can’t keep ignoring the odometer ticking ever closer to 40. It’s a hint that we should actually start embracing adulthood …. let’s say, sometime in the near future.”   This album is exactly that.  Are we seeing a different Veneri on this album: expressing himself as a mature performer, embracing adulthood?  Absolutely!   The album is mature, cleverly written and a good listen that will keep you returning time and time again.

Mike Maurro All You Need To Know

Mike Maurro, a native New Yorker, was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1973. He lived there for the first seven years of his life before his family made a permanent move to Queens, where his passion for music first surfaced. In 1984, after watching the motion picture “Beat Street”, Mike began following dance music by scanning the top dance hits on New York City radio stations such as 100.3 Z-100, Hot 103.5, 98.7 Kiss FM. It was during these years of intense music study that Mike discovered dj's & producers such as Arthur Baker, John Robie, Afrika Bambaataa, John "Jellybean" Benitez, The Latin Rascals & "Little" Louie Vega who fueled his desire to become a DJ. By 1986 he was ready to start mixing. His DJ career began with a handful of 12" records and 2 mis matched turntables he set out to learn the art of beat mixing.  By late 1987 and 1988 He began working mobile jobs such as weddings, birthdays, and block parties with a neighborhood DJ company "All Night Long DJ's"— before he was even old enough to drive.

By 1991, Mike owned his own DJ company "Dj's In Control", but his first real break did not happen until a year later at The Harbor Club in Queens. One night the regular DJ was unable to perform, and Mike (who was working as a bus boy at the time) was called upon to replace him. He began spinning there from time to time, but left the night club in 1993 when he was passed up for a regular position. The next few years were quiet for Mike, who didn’t return to the scene until 1998 when he submitted his mixes to “Brooklyn’s Own” Joe Causi for his WKTU "Studio 54 Clubhouse" show. Causi was impressed at the skill level of the tracks, and placed Mike into rotation with other popular NY area DJ's such as Jenny Costa, Johnny Rocks, Johnny D, Jimmy Yu, Antonio Corrao, Delmar Browne, George Calle, Sally Boy Curto, Louie Mangione and others. Not far after that, Mike began doing a once a week midday mix for 103.5 WKTU, as well as classic dance mixes for 102.7 Mixx FM.

Mike entered the remix world in 2010.......with only a modest desktop computer, a copy of Ableton Live , and a handful of multi tracks downloaded from the internet he began to practice dissecting a song looking for the best combinations of instruments, creating breaks, lengthening intro's etc. After meeting the great Tom Moulton in 2011, he began to understand the true art of the remix.....under the guidance of Tom, Mike began to discover his own style of remixing. And with the tips from other legends in the remix game, Mike has created a signature sound  with unconventional methods of mixing. His  extra long drumless intro's and acappella endings have been widely accepted and praised by artists, dj's and dancers all over the globe from the US, UK , France, Australia,  and Italy. He now owns a powerful Pro Tools based digital studio and is equipped for all types of remix work.

Mike has assisted in developing tracks & consulting for a few aspiring new dance music artists in the NYC area, and is currently producing tracks and remixing for other artists and is looking to develop disco themed remix compilations for worldwide release.

Verneri Pohjola All You Need To Know

VERNERI POHJOLA trumpet, composer

The thirty six year-old trumpeter and composer from Helsinki, Finland has been in the international spotlight for the past few years, and is acknowledged as a jazz star in the making. Having released his two previous albums on the German ACT label to huge critical acclaim, including a five star review from The Guardian, he’s now set to fulfil his enormous creative potential.

Son of the virtuoso bass guitarist Pekka Pohjola, Verneri first came to prominence as leader of Ilmiliekki Quartet, a band that won numerous accolades including the prestigious Teosto Award for original composition. Pohjola soon emerged as a rising star on the Finnish scene, picking up the coveted gong for Musician of the Year at the 2004 Pori Jazz Festival.

As is the case with many great horn players, Pohjola has a distinctive tone, which has a deeply affecting purity and lyricism. His highly melodic improvising is matched by personal compositions marked by memorable and imaginative themes that steer clear of any hackneyed notion of ‘Nordic jazz.’A truly progressive artist with a firm grip on popular culture, Verneri Pohjola is ready to confirm that he is one of the most exciting and original artists of his generation.

Verneri Pohjola’s new album ‘Bullhorn’ featuring pianist Aki Rissanen, bassist Antti Lötjönen and drummer Teppo Mäkynen is released in early 2015.

Press quotes on Bullhorn:

“This album takes its place among the truly finest albums of recent times.”

“Bullhorn, released by the British label Edition Records, includes an hour’s worth of the best Pohjola thus far. He’s more confident, crystallized, focused and also somewhat more mature.”
Helsingin Sanomat

“This album could be one of those top ten desert island releases from Finland.”
Ilkka newspaper

“Everything is subjective, but as the sounds of the Verneri Pohjola Quartet enveloped me, I got the feeling that this is the best jazz in the world.”
Aamulehti (concert review)

“This album makes you love itself.”

“This is a beautifully executed, and quietly surprise-packed set”
The Guardian

“The third album from leading Helsinki-based composer, bandleader and trumpet player Verneri Pohjola is the one that cements his move from longtime rising star to international jazz heavyweight.”
London Evening Standard

“While Pohjola’s 2011 album, Aurora, on the ACT label was a bit of a favourite of mine, this feels a lot more focussed and an even bigger step up in the jazz league.”
The Jazz Breakfast

“Pohjola has long had the qualities which form a complete kind of musicianship, but in Bullhorn the vision is clearer than ever before.”

Other quotes:

“The whole remarkable venture combines memorable original themes with striking ensemble-writing for horns and strings, dramatic brass and percussion sounds, and a faintly disconsolate beauty that nonetheless avoids all the usual north-European, windswept-jazz cliches.” The Guardian (UK) on “Aurora”

“Certainly he draws on Finnish folkloric elements, but in a very personal way, mixing it with other influences, and these pieces in their totality (‘Askisto’ and ‘Spirit of S’ are album highlights) produce a vision of an artist whose exposure on the ACT label should bring long overdue (and deserved) recognition outside his homeland.” Jazzwise (UK) on “Aurora”
